Game Design Director (World of Warships) at War Gaming

Job Overview

Wargaming is looking for an experienced Game Design Director to join the World of Warships team, reporting to the WoWS Franchise Director. 

World of Warships is a globally recognized free-to-play naval combat game enjoyed by millions of players worldwide. Developed by an international team, the game continues to evolve through new features, content, and experiences created for its passionate global community. 
As Game Design Director, you will define and champion the long-term creative vision for World of Warships. You will work in close partnership with Product Development and Publishing to ensure a cohesive player experience and align creative direction with the product roadmap, player expectations, and business goals.

What will you do?

• Drive the Game Design direction and translate the product strategy into clear gameplay priorities and quality standards. 

• Define, communicate, and maintain the creative vision and experience pillars for World of Warships. 

• Work closely  game designers, providing creative direction, feedback, and guidance to ensure alignment with the product vision. 

• Collaborate with Product Development and Publishing to align creative decisions with the product roadmap, audience strategy, and business goals. 

• Review and validate major gameplay features, systems, content, and design deliverables. 

• Balance creative ambition with scope, technology, timelines, player needs, and production realities. 

• Use player feedback, research, market insights, and product data to make design decisions. 

• Represent the creative and Game Design vision to senior leadership, internal stakeholders, and external partners. 

• Foster a collaborative culture that encourages innovation, accountability, and constructive feedback. 

What are we looking for?

• Significant experience as a Creative Director, Game Director, Design Director, or in a comparable senior Game Design leadership role. 

• A proven track record of shipping at least one AAA or comparable PC/console title in a creative or Game Design leadership position. 

• Strong experience leading and developing Game Design teams. 

• Experience defining and delivering a cohesive creative and gameplay vision for a large-scale game, with a focus on meaningful player achievements and progression beyond XP. 

• Strong understanding of live-service development, player experience, gameplay systems, and modern game-production pipelines. 

• Ability to make clear design decisions and resolve cross-discipline trade-offs through collaboration and influence. 

• Strong Game Design skills, with experience using BI and AI tools to inform decisions, analyze player behavior, and support game development. 

• Strong people-management, communication, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.  

• The ability to make ships emotionally compelling and memorable by bringing their history, scale, and character to life. 

• The ability to define and uphold clear creative principles, team standards, and a strong development culture. 

• Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

What additional skills will help you stand out?

• Experience working on a successful free-to-play or long-running live-service game. 

• Experience with multiplayer, tactical, vehicle-based, or military-themed games. 

• Understanding of the World of Warships product, audience, and community. 

• Experience evolving an established global game or IP. 

• Proficiency in Russian is preferred, as the role involves regular communication with Russian-speaking team members and stakeholders. 

Work mode

Remote position based anywhere in Germany, with frequent travel to our Belgrade office.
