Job Description

Do you want to shape a century of revolutions, reforms, and societal transformation? Are you a storyteller who understands that in a grand strategy game, the best narratives emerge from systems? If you are ready to bring your craft and experience to a team that offers challenges, trust, and ownership, we want to hear from you!

Your Goal

As an Experienced Content Designer on Victoria 3, you will be a champion of the player experience with narrative in the game. Victoria 3 spans world history of the Victorian era and lets players lead any country through the most transformative century in human history. Your mission is to envision, design, write, and script narrative content that makes that world feel alive and to raise the quality bar for content across the game.

You will join a design team specializing in narrative design, technical scripting, and systems design. We research diligently and hunt everywhere for inspiration. As an experienced designer, we expect you to take ownership of larger content-focused DLCs from concept through release, and to help less experienced designers grow through reviews and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Design, write, and implement events, Journal Entries, and other narrative content in American English that fits the tone, themes, and vision of Victoria 3.

  • Own content-focused DLCs end-to-end: pitch ideas, prototype, implement, polish, and support your DLC after release.

  • Script narrative content and balance it by tuning values using our in-house scripting language.

  • Research 19th- and early 20th-century history for both accuracy and inspiration, and craft believable alternative history storylines grounded in that research.

  • Review other designers' content and writing, give constructive feedback, and mentor less experienced content designers.

  • Define what you need from other disciplines (art, code, QA, localization, and others) and coordinate to deliver on time and to a high-quality standard.

  • Raise issues early, propose improvements to our content pipeline and standards, including the use of AI tools, and inspire the people around you.

  • Play the game regularly to stay connected to the real player experience.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a content designer, narrative designer, or game designer.

  • Excellent command of written American English. (Please note that we will review your CV and cover letter with attention to grammar, clarity, and tone, as these are essential skills for this role.)

  • Familiarity with code-based scripting (reading, writing, and debugging scripts).

  • A deep and genuine interest in strategy games, and in Paradox Development Studio grand strategy games in particular.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with PDS games through modding.

  • Experience working on a live game with a recurring expansion and update cadence.

  • Experience reviewing, editing, or mentoring other designers' work.

  • Interest in or education in history, especially the Victorian era.

Who you are

You find motivation in having the freedom and responsibility to take ownership of tasks and deliver on agreed expectations. You care about quality, and the idea of our many fans around the world praising your work after release energizes you. But you also understand the concept of “done is better than perfect” and apply it wisely. You are not afraid to raise issues, you continuously look for improvement, and you seek to inspire your teammates. At Paradox, you will be part of a result-driven, high-trust, and player-centric culture: our games and players take center stage, and our first priority is always to add player value.

Practical Information

We would like your application to include work samples and/or a link to your portfolio, if you have any. We are especially interested in shipped narrative or game content that you designed and implemented yourself.

If this description matches your background, we look forward to receiving your application!
