Job Description

We're an independent AA studio founded by two brothers with a dream; inspired by games like Anarchy Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Neocron and WoW, we're pushing the bounds of the genre with polished gameplay, vibrant visuals, and a dash of creative ideas never seen before. With a passion for immersive world building, our fast-growing team of multi-national talent is using Unreal Engine 5 to build a revolutionary MMORPG that blends traditional philosophies with trailblazing innovation. Our studio in Weesp is easily accessible by public transport (station Weesp) and car (A1) and offers an environment where positive work culture stands central to effective collaboration. Working in-house at Grid Games means an opportunity to directly shape the evolution of our ambitious vision.

We're looking for An experienced UX Designer to join our Design team. You’ll own the flow, structure, and design philosophies of the game’s many interfaces (menus, action bars, inventory, levelling and progression, social, HUD, etc) as well as the other feedback systems such as VFX and audio. You’ll be a key driver in finding a style and visual language that will impact how players interact with our game.

In this role you will: Map player flows, information architecture, and interaction logic across our UI, with particular attention to MMORPG-specific challenges: what to prioritize on screen and when, across long, systemically dense play sessions. Understand our intention behind social gameplay philosophy, designing compelling user experiences and interfaces that truly embody our goals. Partner with VFX and Audio teams to inform the balance of in-world feedback, understanding what a player needs and wants and then pushing beyond to ensure the player experience is memorable throughout. Propose wireframes, layouts, and interaction states as necessary to help construct prototype UI that can be playtested to validate theories and carve a path forward.Work closely with the Lead Game Designer to digest the wider design team’s requests or suggestions and truly understand them to devise solutions that tackle the sources of a player problem rather than just the symptoms. Collaborate across multiple disciplines, including Concept Art, Animation, Sound, VFX, QA, and Production, as necessary to ensure that workflows for all other teams downwind of the design process run smoothly and efficiently. We are a small team and we want to remain small!

Your qualifications Proven experience designing UX for games, with a track record of owning flows and interface design end to end. Strong hands-on experience with MMORPGs as a player, with a real understanding of how the MMORPG experience changes throughout a player’s career within a single game or the genre as a whole. We would like to hear your opinions on how information and feedback is delivered during a play session or for different player types! Experience designing for heavily player-driven social systems, particularly chat and trading. Comfortable assessing and scheduling your own workload across multiple, often concurrent workstreams, to ensure the goals of the project are constantly in mind, not getting lost in the minutiae of the day to day. Experience in Figma or similar tools for wireframing, prototyping, and good experience using these tools to effectively communicate with a wide variety of other teams that will be referencing your work throughout the project (especially code and design). A champion of good UX (and UI) designs that can inspire others to support good UX practices and approaches. We are a small team that works efficiently because we continually elevate our colleagues’ abilities. We want you to bring your wealth of experience into the team to help guide working practices, approaches, and mentalities, allowing you to impact the whole studio far beyond only your own deliverables. Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and confidently across multiple concurrent workstreams, applying your awareness of the bigger picture and supporting the Lead Game Designer in planning and task management.

Extra points Experience working within both smaller and larger studios. Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine's UMG or similar UI frameworks – showing us how you want something to work is very valuable. Understanding of accessibility-related design considerations. Personal or solo game or UI/UX projects you can walk us through!

What we offer Salary offered is based on numerous factors such as education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, and organizational needs. Initial contract of 1 year (40 hours per week) Annual full-time gross salary of €50K – €70K (including 8% holiday bonus) Working from home 1 day per week 25 vacation days per year + additional based on tenure Pension compensation (10% of base gross salary, paid monthly) Travel cost compensation (public transportation/car/bicycle journey, paid monthly) Annual budget for your professional development

Portfolio requirements You must provide a portfolio or demo reel of your capabilities as a UX (and/or UI) Designer: flows, wireframes, and interfaces you've had a hand in creating. Please ensure that the elements or approaches you contributed to the design are clearly identifiable as these are what we want to talk to you about! We receive a large volume of applications, and we aim to thoroughly review them all, however, this also means that we aren’t able to respond to applications sent without a portfolio or demo reel. Please include a link in your uploaded CV file.
