Job Description

Senior UI/UX DesignerLocation: Remote-firstType: Full-time Start: ASAP

About Couch Heroes:At Couch Heroes, we’re exploring new ground for the MMO genre. In a world where fantasy and ancient technology intertwine, players explore shattered realms, grapple across verticality, solve puzzles, and push back corruption, with progression driven by player expression and discovery. We envision creating a bridge between the gamers of the 80s all the way to the gamers of today, creating a space where both coexist and journey together. We’re developing in Unreal Engine, in early production, with a team spanning multiple countries. We’re remote-first, based in the UK, and scaling to support a multi-year live-service roadmap. We value autonomy, curiosity, and collaborative ownership, and we’re looking for creators who want to help build something from the ground up. Sound like your kind of thing? We should talk.

About the Job: Game UI is the surface between the player and every system in the world: combat, inventory, crafting, social, navigation, and progression. In an MMO, that surface is vast, information-dense, and in constant use across sessions that last hours. This is not a paper-design role. We need a Senior UI/UX Designer who can take a concept from wireframe through art-directed visual assets to working in-engine implementation. You are the full pipeline, from sketch to screen. You will report to the Game Director and work closely with game design, art direction, gameplay engineering, VFX, and production. Your designs will define how players interact with every system in the game, from moment-to-moment combat feedback to long-session inventory management and guild administration.

We are in early production. The game’s UI framework, visual language, component library, and interaction patterns are still being established. You will be making foundational decisions about how the game’s interface looks, feels, and functions. The standards you set will shape every screen, HUD element, and menu the player touches for the life of the product. This is a hands-on production role, not a management position. But we need someone who can operate with independence, provide thoughtful feedback to other artists, and contribute to pipeline and process discussions as the team grows.

Your Role: Interface Design and ProductionDesign, art, and build the game’s HUD, menu systems, and in-world UI from wireframe through asset creation to working implementation in Unreal Engine 5’s UMG system. Author Widget Blueprints, configure layout panels, set up data bindings, and implement interaction logic directly in-engine.Create production-quality UI art assets: icons for abilities, items, buffs, and status effects, plus panel textures, frames, button states, and decorative elements. Manage the art pipeline from Photoshop and Illustrator through to import-ready assets in Unreal Engine.Work collaboratively with the Art Director to establish the UI visual language. The interface should feel like it belongs to the world, not like a generic overlay. Own the execution of that language across every UI surface.Design for player customisation. MMO players expect to reposition elements, adjust scale, toggle visibility, and save layouts. Design components that function independently and compose gracefully under player rearrangement.Build with performance awareness. Understand widget complexity, invalidation strategies, and draw call implications. Design for resolution independence and localisation so layouts function from 1080p to 4K ultrawide and accommodate text expansion across languages.

Collaboration and Validation:Work with game design to translate system designs into player-facing interfaces. Understand the rules, edge cases, and data structures behind each system so the UI communicates them accurately.Collaborate with VFX and audio to integrate visual and audio feedback into UI interactions. UI feel is a product of all three disciplines working together.Maintain a UI component library documenting all reusable elements with all states and usage guidelines. Produce clear specs so engineers can implement without guessing intent.Run focused UI playtests to validate designs before full production. Iterate based on what you observe, not what you assumed.

Must-Haves:5+ years of experience as a game UI/UX designer, with at least one shipped title where you owned in-game UI from design through to in-engine implementation.A strong portfolio demonstrating the full UI pipeline: wireframes, visual design, art asset creation, and shipped in-engine screens. Process matters as much as polish.Proficiency with Figma, Photoshop, and Illustrator for wireframing, UI asset creation, icon design, and specification.Working experience building UI in Unreal Engine UMG: Widget Blueprints, anchors, layout panels, data bindings, and animation. You implement your own designs.Strong understanding of information hierarchy and visual composition applied to real-time game contexts where readability under pressure is a core constraint.Familiarity with MMO interface conventions. You have played and studied how major MMOs handle information density, player customisation, and system-heavy UI, and you have informed opinions about what works and what does not.Clear communication skills. You can present design rationale, document component specs, and have productive conversations with engineers and designers about constraints and trade-offs.

Nice-to-Haves:Experience shipping UI for an MMO or persistent online world through production and into live service.Experience with Unreal Engine’s Common UI plugin for cross-platform input routing, focus management, and activatable widget patterns.Experience with diegetic or world-integrated UI design: interface elements that exist within the game’s fiction rather than overlaid on top of it.Motion design skills: UI transitions, feedback animations, and state changes in After Effects or directly in UMG animation sequences.

About You:You take ownership of the spaces you build. When you hand off an environment, it’s complete, considered, and ready for the next discipline to build on.You understand how art supports gameplay, not just visual appeal. You think about sightlines, readability, pacing, and player flow as much as material quality and prop density. You can balance density and clarity in open world spaces. You know when a space needs more detail and when restraint serves the player better. You respond well to feedback and iterate quickly. Early production means direction will evolve, and you see that as part of the process, not a disruption to it.You are comfortable working through ambiguity. Not everything is defined yet, and you see that as an opportunity to help shape the right answer. You care about clean pipeline execution and long-term scalability. You build things properly because you know the team will be building on your work for years. You work autonomously in a remote environment, proactively keeping your lead and collaborators informed without needing to be chased. We are committed to making our hiring process accessible. If you require reasonable adjustments at any stage, please let us know.
