Quick Summary

Role Overview

SpAItial is seeking its first Design Engineer to lead the design system and product experience for their physically-grounded world models. You will bridge the gap between brand identity and production-quality front-end implementation across web and mobile surfaces. This role involves defining how users interact with and create 3D environments in a pioneering AI space.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate the company brand into a comprehensive design system for all digital surfaces
  • Maintain shared Figma libraries and documentation to ensure consistent product experiences
  • Design responsive web interfaces for world creation and 3D viewing tools
  • Create mobile-specific journeys for capturing and uploading 3D content
  • Define novel interaction models for navigating and manipulating generated 3D worlds
  • Implement production-quality front-end interfaces using React and TypeScript

Requirements Snapshot

  • At least 4 years of professional experience in product design or design engineering
  • Proven portfolio featuring scalable design systems and shipped web and mobile products
  • Proficiency in Figma including advanced components and prototyping features
  • Ability to write and ship production-ready code using React and TypeScript
  • Strong systems thinking regarding typography layout and responsive interaction states

Expected Impact

As the founding Design Engineer, you will establish the visual and interaction foundation for how humanity interacts with 3D AI world models. Your work will directly influence the usability of complex spatial tools, setting the standard for the company's product ecosystem and brand identity. By bridging design and engineering, you will accelerate the delivery of high-fidelity interfaces that define a new category of creative technology.

Job Description

SpAItial is pioneering Physically-grounded World Models, a new AI paradigm designed to generate and reason about the appearance and physics of real and imagined environments. We are moving beyond 2D pixels to build models that natively understand the geometry of our world, redefining how industries from robotics and AR/VR to gaming and cinema create and interact with 3D environments.

We are looking for our first Design Engineer to own the design system and product experience across SpAItial's web and mobile surfaces. You will translate the company brand into reusable product patterns, clear interaction models, and production-quality front-end experiences that you can help design and ship.

You will work closely with product engineers to design how people create, explore, and edit 3D worlds across web and mobile. You own product design, interaction models, reusable components, prototypes, and production front-end implementation. This is a hands-on role for someone equally comfortable maintaining a design system, resolving the details of a complex product flow, and shipping high-quality interfaces.

We care far more about the quality and range of your work than where you have worked. Show us design systems you have built, web and mobile products you have shipped, and examples of how your designs held together from concept through implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Brand and design system. Translate SpAItial's brand into practical rules for typography, colour, iconography, layout, components, and interaction across product and company surfaces.

  • Design infrastructure. Own shared Figma libraries, components, variables, templates, and documentation so teams can build consistent experiences without redesigning common patterns.

  • Web product design. Design responsive experiences for world creation, the 3D viewer, editing, onboarding, accounts, and pricing or upgrade surfaces. Work with product engineers from early concepts through polished implementation.

  • Mobile product design. Design clear capture, upload, generation, and viewing journeys for mobile devices, accounting for camera workflows, permissions, progress states, failure recovery, and platform conventions.

  • Spatial interaction. Define how people move through and manipulate generated 3D worlds, including camera behaviour, navigation, selection, editing, and transitions. These interaction patterns are not established yet.

  • Website and company surfaces. Design the marketing site, careers pages, technical documentation, and reusable presentation templates as extensions of the same system used in the product.

  • Front-end implementation. Turn designs and prototypes into production-quality interfaces. Build reusable components, implement responsive behaviour and interaction states, and collaborate with product engineers through review and release.

Key qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience in product design, design engineering, digital product design, or a similar role.

  • A strong portfolio that includes a scalable design system and shipped web and mobile product work.

  • Strong systems thinking across typography, layout, colour, components, interaction states, and responsive behaviour.

  • Strong interaction and product-design fundamentals across responsive web and native mobile experiences, including accessibility and platform conventions.

  • Fluency in Figma, including components, variables, prototyping, and design systems that other people can use.

  • Able to write and ship production front-end code using React and TypeScript, or a comparable modern web stack, with strong attention to accessibility, responsiveness, performance, and maintainability.

  • Comfortable working directly with engineers, understanding implementation constraints, reviewing builds, and refining details through release.

  • High ownership and comfort with ambiguity. You will be the first person in this role and will define the design function.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing products involving 3D, spatial computing, cameras, creative tools, or technically complex workflows.

  • Familiarity with Gaussian splats, WebGL, Three.js, React Three Fiber, PlayCanvas, Blender, Unreal, AR, XR, or VR.

  • Experience with 3D web development using Three.js, React Three Fiber, PlayCanvas, WebGL, or similar tools.

  • Experience with native mobile design tooling or production mobile application stacks.

  • Experience building or extending a design system across both product and marketing surfaces.

At SpAItial, we are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and ensure all candidates are treated fairly throughout the recruitment process.
