Mechanical Design Engineer - Thermal Systems

Job Description

ALTEN UK is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to support projects in thermal management and heat shielding for automotive, motorsport, and high-performance applications. You’ll play a key role in designing innovative heat shield assemblies and integrating advanced thermal barrier technologies.

What you’ll be doing:

• Designing rigid and flexible heat shield assemblies, including panel design, fastening methods, and material selection.
• Creating detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks, Siemens NX, or Catia.
• Working with materials and coatings engineers to integrate advanced ceramic thermal barrier coatings.
• Conducting DFMEA to ensure durability, manufacturability, and performance under thermal stress.
• Collaborating with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and motorsport teams to understand packaging and functional requirements.
• Supporting prototype builds, fitment trials, and validation testing against thermal, vibration, and environmental standards.
• Liaising with manufacturing teams to ensure DFM and process optimisation.
• Providing technical input during project reviews, presentations, and problem-solving workshops.

Qualifications

What we’re looking for:

• Experience in thermal management, heat shielding, or powertrain systems design (e.g. exhaust systems, turbo heat shields, underbody protection).
• Proficiency in 3D CAD and engineering drawings with GD&T standards.
• Knowledge of materials for thermal protection (stainless steel, Inconel, composites, ceramic coatings, thermal blankets).
• Experience in sheet metal design, forming techniques, and fixation methods (riveting, welding, bolting).
• Familiarity with vibration, thermal fatigue, and NVH considerations.
• Hands-on prototype build/fitment validation experience desirable.
• Strong communication skills for direct interaction with OEMs and motorsport clients.
